Rove and Scooter should be Executed

Want to hear some Franken jokes?

Get ready to bust a gut or even pee in your pants.

This past Friday, while a guest on Letterman's show, Franken made the following jokes
about Rove and Libby regarding the Valerie Plame investigation:

"And so basically, what it looks like is going to happen is that Libby and Karl Rove are going to be executed...”

"...but they are going to be executed it looks like."

Done laughing yet?

Or maybe this wasn't a joke after all. I mean if Ann Coulter can be demonized repeatedly for saying it's too bad that Timothy McVeigh didn't bomb the NY Times instead of the federal bldg in Oklahoma, then why is Franken getting a pass?

Because he's a satirist and Ann isn't!!!

Isn't that something that Bin Laden is innocent until proven guilty but Rove and Libby should be executed?

One thing I haven't yet been able to understand. If Rove's alleged outing of the fair Valerie was an attempt to "get even with her husband Joe" how does outing her get even?

Wouldn't it have made more sense to dig up some dirt on him? He recently decribed himself as a child of the 60's who had too many wives and too much drugs...and did inhale.

The funny part is that Al said, and has said repeatedly, that he _doesn't_ want to see anyone executed. In fact, he says we should quickly pass a consitutional ammendment prohibiting the execution of sitting presidents and VPs (just in case they are implicated in any treasonous activities). See, it's funny because he is highlighting the seriousness of the potential crime (treason) by specifically lobbying against the most severe punishment sometimes delivered for it (execution). This is not the same as jokingly calling for their execution. I think your headline is deceiving because I'm fairly certain that Franken has never said "Rove and Scooter should be Executed", just that they might be (of course it is obvious he doesn't think they will).

A feature of comedy is the element of surprise or the unexpected. Nobody seriously thinks that anyone is going to be executed for the Valerie Wilson leak, but it GHW Bush has said that leaking a CIA agent's identy is treason (and it certainly is against the law) so by exagerating the potential consequences (another common comedic device) we get a double dose of humor.

A. Skorski,

Actually, I think it is YOU who needs to chill out.

Perhaps you prefer your humor in the Limbaugh vein but Franken was clearly using satire.

But the real comedy of it is watching the knew jerk reaction by his critics, like you, taking Franken's jokes seriously.

That was the point of the original post, which again, you missed.

When Ann Coulter said that McVeigh should have hit the NY Times bldg , instead of the Oklahoma federal bldg. she, too, was joking. Yet the left who claims to have an incredible sense of humor lashed out at her.

Yet Franken is a satirical genius when he calls for violence (albeit in jest) against the right.

The fact that you do not know the difference between the two comments (by Al & Ann) shows that you truly don't understand satire.

Al does not "call for violence against the right", his joke simply states that if the President and the VP are ever found guilty of treason, they could face a possible execution. This is not calling for violence against the right, because in order to be executed they would have to have been found guilty by a court of law, then given the sentence of execution. This is not some random act of violence as you suggest. Unlike your Mr. Coulter's comment, which does suggest a random act of violence against the NY Times (which I assume he thinks is a Left wing publication).

p.s. Don't bother correcting me, I do know that Mr. Coulter is attempting to portray himself as a woman. Also, I must admit I found it ironic that you would tell "ekpuz" to chill, when you clearly are the one who needs to chill. It's not "ekpuz" that is devoting a blog and books to attacking a satirist (time for you to take a good look in the mirror).
